We are local people on your side. If elected, Labour councillors will be active in their communities: they will stay in touch, listen and help. For the 2023 Epsom and Ewell local elections we commit to:

1. Saving our Green Belt  The Residents’ Association are proposing to build on large parts of the Green Belt across Epsom and Ewell. We’ll fight their terrible plans. There is no need to build on the green belt as there are 1,600 housing units already planned and sufficient space on brownfield sites and by redeveloping office and commercial space for many thousands more. It’s enough for 20-30 years of development. Save the Green Belt! Build on brownfield sites and redevelop office and commercial space to add the needed homes.
.
2. Development that works for all Epsom and Ewell Borough Council has a terrible record on building affordable and social housing that means many people cannot get on the housing ladder or end up homeless. We commit to building 20% affordable homes and 20% social homes within the housing mix. This would be over 5x what the Council is currently providing.
.
3. Fix our roads and pavements From roads riddled with potholes to cracked pavements we will fight for Surrey County Council to invest in improvements and fix the terrible, dangerous mess our roads and pavements are now in. Labour councillors will be pro-active and help local residents to get things fixed. If elected, our councillors, won’t hide away and avoid communications as we hear some others do.
.
4. A Safer Epsom and Ewell Anti-social behaviour, drug dealing, and nuisance noise needs to be stopped. We need more regular policing and more police resources. Epsom and Ewell has been overlooked for too long. We’ll campaign for more police resources across the Borough.
.
5. Better Local Services The local Conservatives and Residents’ Association have overseen a terrible decline in our local NHS, public transport, Police and Fire Services. Starving them of funds and leaving people to queue endlessly for attention. We’ll fight for better services. Only by voting Labour can we get more money into the NHS. We want our train and bus services improved and our fire services safeguarded from more cuts.
.
6. A Thriving Town Centre The Council needs a clear plan to boost the town centre. The businesses which residents really want need to be encouraged to come and stay. We want our town centre to thrive, not die.
.
7. Stop Sewage Dumping in Local Rivers Thames Water, permitted by the Conservative Government, are overflowing sewage into the Hogsmill in Ewell and Green Lanes Stream in Epsom. It’s horrendous! The rivers are tiny chalk streams that should be havens of wildlife. Labour councillors have lobbied the CEO and the Board of Thames Water direct and met with their senior managers this Autumn. We’ll continue to highlight the issue and campaign to stop the terrible practice that is polluting and killing our streams. Our petition to stop the overflowing of sewage into local streams is here if you’d like to support us: www.change.org/hogsmillsewage
.
8. A Cleaner Epsom & Ewell  With regular litter picks and fines for littering and fly tipping, we’ll pay for extra street cleaning. We also want to trial a scheme to provide a free community skip from time to time to certain areas so that residents can get rid of unwanted clutter for free. It’s worked in other boroughs and is worth a go in Epsom and Ewell.
.
9. ULEZ – a scrappage scheme for Surrey as well as London drivers. We understand that for a small number of people ULEZ is going to be an issue. It only affects around 10% of vehicles however these are the ones poisoning the air causing 4,000 premature deaths a year just in London and stunting children’s brain development by up to 10% in high traffic areas. Anyone who has been behind an old dirty bus or HGV knows how bad the pollution can be. And it’s kids, pedestrians, and cyclists who pay the price not the drivers sat in their air conditioned cars breathing filtered air. Now we know the terrible impact of the micro-particles, like with asbestos or lead in petrol, or smoking in pubs, we can’t ignore it. But we also know that swapping up your car may be daunting. That’s why we support a Surrey scrappage scheme, as Labour is doing in London, so that the cost to impacted drivers of swapping up their cars is minimised and so that we can get the toxic vehicles off the road. We shouldn’t forget that almost all petrol cars are ULEZ compliant and ULEZ compliant petrol cars can bought second hand from just a few hundred pounds. We all deserve to breathe clean, healthy air, not air polluted by highly poisonous, deadly micro particles and the County Council should be helping us all to do this, not playing silly games with signs and cameras to keep the highly polluting vehicles on the road.
